Zen Gardening for Kids

As simple as a haiku and changeable as an autumn afternoon, this stone garden is a creative project for children to bring the outdoors inside. Make it as simple or elaborate as you wish.

You'll need a few supplies to get started.

Fine sand or salt

A tray or plate

A fork or tiny rake

First you will need to fill your tray

1. First fill your tray with fine sand being careful to get it all into the tray. Start from the middle and work your way out to the sides.

Gently move the sand

2. Gently shift the plate back and forth until the sand covers it evenly. Next with your fork gently move the sand around your garden. Making sure that it covers all of the tray.

.Put your rake into the garden

3. Put your fork into the garden and draw into the sand. Try doing some straight lines first.

Try adding a patterns

4. Then add a pattern to your garden with circles. If this is too difficult with the tines of the fork, use the handle to draw spirals.

Then place your stones back

5. Place your stones into you garden in the circles to represent ripples in the water.

6. Start again with a clean slate. Try adding waves to your garden or fill it with circles. Be creative!
